As Travis Scott faces intense scrutiny over whatever role he played in the events leading up to the deadly crowd surge at his Astroworld Festival last week, people have been bringing up other past controversies the rapper was embroiled in, including the time he hurled homophobic slurs at one of his concerts.
Back in 2015, Scott was performing in Houston (where Astroworld Festival took place) when he got upset that fans in the front weren’t raging as hard as he wanted them to be, and decided to express that by calling them f*ggots.
“Ain’t cool with none of you f*ggots just sitting here looking like a bunch of queers,” he spat into his microphone.
At the time, Scott sort of apologized, but ultimately tried to hand-wave it all away as a result of getting too amped up (“when I get excited I tend to say the first thing on my mind out loud”) and insisted that “never will I ever disrespect that community,” despite just having done so.
This is far from the only time Scott has been criticized for insulting fans, and the clip is six years old at this point, but there’s still a renewed sense of frustration over it in light of recent events.
Scott is already facing at least one lawsuit related to the Astroworld chaos, and it’s anticipated that more will follow.
