Rapper T.I. took to the stage on April 9, but not to perform his music, seemingly to the crowd’s disappointment—he was performing stand-up comedy at the April Fools Comedy Jam at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The show featured comedians Rip Micheals, Nick Cannon, HaHa Davis, Eddie Griffin, B. Simone, Tony Roberts, Bruce Bruce, Michael Blackson, Joe Torry, and Jacob Williams, plus performances by Lil’ Kim, T.I., Moneybagg Yo, and music by DJ Envy.

This was T.I.’s first paid comedy gig, and if the videos circulating from the performance are anything to go by, the audience wasn’t interested in his performance, booing him and telling him to get off the stage. T.I. ignored the taunts from the crowd and finished his act.

Videos from the performance went viral online, and T.I. discussed what happened with Michael Blackson while on Instagram Live.

When he was asked if he enjoyed the performance, T.I. replied, “Yes! I loved it. I didn’t feel like they were booing me. I felt like they were booing me as, ‘I dare you to be more funny, I dare you to overcome this. I dare you to do better.’ I feel like that’s what they challenged me to do and I did it.”

He wasn’t particularly bothered by the boos and heckling from the crowd.

“I don’t care what they show, bruh, ’cause I ain’t seeking nobody’s validation,” he said. “I’m not here for nobody else’s approval. I don’t give a damn.”

T.I. has only recently stepped into the comedy world in the past couple of months. J. Cole made reference to his new interest in his collaboration with BIA, “London,” in which he raps, “I laugh at these rappers for capping / I guess T.I.P ain’t the only out here with jokes.”

People on social media were equally confused by the rapper’s stand-up routine.

Hopefully, if T.I. decides to stick with comedy he’ll improve, but only time will tell.
