After months of nothing, Congress was finally ready to dole out a bipartisan COVID-19 relief package to get help to Americans struggling the most as the year comes to an end. The package included assistance for small businesses and unemployed people who meet certain criteria, but it also handed out excessive tax relief for wealthy business owners and stuck the average American with a measly $600 check.
In a disruptive move, President Trump announced Tuesday night that he had no intention of signing a bill that provided less than a $2000 check to Americans who qualify. Democrats immediately supported the move, while Republicans — who had previously insisted $600 was their maximum — are now stuck between defying the president they’ve rolled over for time and time again in the last four years or actually allowing something that would benefit the non-wealthy go through.
We have no idea how this is going to play out, or when, but most people agree with Trump (gasp, I know) that a measly $600 on top of the whopping $1200 we all got at the start of the pandemic isn’t anywhere near enough COVID relief. It’s a complete joke.
And people on social media are responding appropriately.
