The My Grandpa Was Such A Vibe meme is basically an extended parody of people who like their family.
Know Your Meme reports that the format is pretty simple: you just take a photo of something pop culture relevant, make it black and white, and then post a caption that implies you’re related to the person in the image, and say they are a vibe. The end.
The first one they know of was posted on April 1st, 2021, by Twitter user @awdummy who tweeted a photo of guy who had gone viral as a meme when he posted the image to Twitter with the words, “You Know I Had To Do It To Em.”
“My grandpa was such a vibe in the 40s,” they wrote over it.
The format took off, as people shared images of obscure to not so obscure celebrities, memes, and even anime characters, always pretending they were showing off someone from their family tree. It’s a pretty unaccessible joke for a meme, in my opinion, so I’m surprised it’s so popular. Some people, especially K-Pop stans, seem to be taking it pretty seriously as a way to express actual love of the people in the images.
Most other people seem to be simultaneously making fun of anyone who posts old thirst trap pics of their grandparents and showing the depth of their pop culture knowledge. A truly elitist meme, and thus perfect for Twitter:
