The Lakers and the Pistons were gearing up to go for the ball following a free throw by Jerami Grant in Detroit on Sunday. As James and Pistons player Isaiah Stewart jockeyed for a better position, James’ elbow collided with Stewart’s face.

Stewart was left bloodied, but James’ teammates say the blow was an accident, something seemingly echoed by Pistons coach Dwane Casey.

“It was a tough play with Isaiah,” Casey said. “His eye got cracked all the way open, and he was upset for a reason. So, I don’t think James is a dirty player, but again, it got them going.”

Stewart’s “upset” led to him coming after James right there on the court following the blow. It got heated and players from both teams tried to separate them. The Lakers star soon extricated himself from the violent huddle, but Stewart continued to fight with players, refs, and coaches to get back to him.

This went on for some time, with Stewart breaking free and lunging for James on multiple occasions, even after the commentators seemed to assume the brawl attempt was over.

“I’ve never in 10 years seen a player try to do that as long as I’ve been playing,” Lakers player Anthony Davis said after the game. “It’s uncalled for. You got a cut above your eye, accidental-like, it wasn’t on purpose… I don’t know what he was trying to do, but we wasn’t going to allow that.”

James and Stewart were both ejected from the game.
