Celebrities definitely sign up for some weird stuff. In exchange for fame and fortune beyond most people’s wildest dreams, they get constant scrutiny. There are different opinions about how fair or not fair that is, but this viral video of Justin Bieber pleading with fans to stop lingering outside of his apartment might melt even the stoniest of hearts.
The clip was posted by TikToker @VanessaFex, and it shows Bieber walking towards his NYC apartment past a small crowd of devoted admirers. He asks them to leave and one of them STILL asks him for a hug. It’s what the kids call “cringe.”
“This is where I live,” he told them. “And I don’t appreciate you guys being here. You know when you come home at the end of the night, and you want to relax? This is my space to do that. So I would appreciate it if you guys could leave.”
That makes sense to me. All jobs deserve a little off time, otherwise, no one can ever recharge and get back to it at their full pop star powers. And it definitely seems over the line to go to someone’s house to get their attention.
Real fans should know by now that Bieber has no love for his home stalkers. He posted an Instagram story back in October about the same issue, writing, “How do you convince yourself it’s not completely inappropriate and disrespectful to wait outside my home to gawk, stare and take pictures as I walk into my apartment? This is not a hotel. It’s my home.”
BuzzFeed pointed out that Bieber has been talking more and more about boundaries and what he feels comfortable doing as an incredibly famous person. In a recent interview with Billboard, he talked about saying “no” in general.
“I definitely learned how to have boundaries, and I just don’t feel like I owe anybody anything,” he said. “That has helped me to be able to just say no and just be firm in it and know that my heart [wants] to help people, but I can’t do everything. I want to sometimes, but it’s just not sustainable.”
One person, even one very rich person, only has so many hugs to give out a day. And he’ll do it when he wants to, not just because you ask.
