On Saturday morning, a hot hair balloon plummeted to the ground, killing five people, Insider reports. Video of the deflated balloon plummeting from the sky has been released, though the gondola containing the passengers reportedly detached from the balloon first and cannot be seen in the footage. The balloon went down in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and hit a power line that took out power for 13,000 local residents.
A short clip was shared by KRQE meteorologist Grant Tosterud on Twitter:
And a longer clip by YouTube user Jesus Villanueva:
A response to the Albuquerque Police Department indicated that the balloon came down in a residential area:
The five people included two men, one of whom was the pilot, two women, and a fifth man who was taken to the hospital, where they died of their injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration says the basket fell from a height of about 100 feet and caught fire when it crashed in the street. It’s unclear if the balloon was privately owned or not, but the situation is being investigated.
