The thing about embarrassment of any kind is that each excruciating incident is always something we relive over and over again, playing the awkwardness back in our minds as we try to sleep at night, or cringing throughout the day as we’re randomly reminded of how uncomfortable a situation became. It doesn’t matter how long ago the embarrassment happened, that kind of emotion just sticks with you forever.
So when Chrissy Teigen tweeted out what she considers to be the most embarrassing thing that can happen to her, it sparked a wave of responses on Twitter concerning people’s personal most shameful moments, as the memories were drudged back up yet again.
“To me, the most embarrassing thing in [the] entire entire entire entire entire entire entire entire entire world, as in I wanna melt into a puddle and down a drain into the ocean then [be] boiled into steam and blown into the atmosphere, is calling someone by the wrong name,” Teigen wrote.
It’s a relatable fear. Blanking on someone’s name pales in comparison to confidently presuming you know exactly who they are and what you should be calling them only to find out after the fact that you were completely off base.
She also followed up with another truth that somehow makes it all worse — “if any of us, any of us!, were called by the wrong name, WE WOULD NOT CARE? I can’t imagine caring.”
While many immediately agreed with Teigen that this is definitely one of the most embarrassing things you can do, others chimed in with their own anecdotes of largely identity-related humiliating moments. So sit back and prepare for the second-hand shame to wash over you as you read through these tweets.
