On Monday afternoon, Bill and Melinda Gates announced that they were getting a divorce after 27 years of marriage. The news sent shockwaves through the Internet as people took to social media to express shock and concern, but also to (predictably) make jokes and memes about one of the world’s wealthiest couples splitting up.
Bill and Melinda both posted the same official statement about their divorce on their separate Twitter accounts. It reads:
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and build a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”
According to reports, the pair did not sign a prenuptial agreement before they were married, causing some to wonder how exactly they’d split their assets. Bill Gates is currently worth $129 billion, making him the fourth-richest person on Earth.
