A$AP Rocky walked down the red carpet at the 2021 Met Gala in some quarantine fashion everyone recognized as their favorite outfit in 2020. Wrapped in a rainbow quilt, he accompanied his girlfriend Rihanna, who was somewhat more formally clothed.
While many recognized A$AP’s look on a spiritual level, one family recognized his quilt because it was an heirloom.
A woman named Sarah posted on her Instagram account @books_n_babies on the platform that the quilt was made by her great grandmother and it had been donated to a thrift store.
“When I saw the #metgala Photo I realized instantly that it had to be the same quilt,” she wrote in a caption. “I read the vogue article about the designer finding the quilt in Southern California and with his office not that far from us in Venice California, I demanded that my mom go look for the photos of it on our old bed. Looks like great grandma Mary went to the #metgala with @asaprocky and @erl__________ they wrote a @voguemagazine article too.”
She then shared a photo of the couple side-by-side with what looks like the same quilt thrown over a bed:
How fun for the life of the quilt! But commenters seemed to take Sarah’s post the wrong way, as they often do, and she had to do a follow-up post that says she’s not upset to see her great grandmother’s quilt on the runway nor does she want any money.
“I am only posting this because I wanted to clarify that we aren’t accusing anyone of stealing this and we don’t want money,” she said. “I posted this because I found it amazing that something that my great grandmother made out of love for my mother, to be used to keep her warm, and was donated so that it might keep somebody else warm or sold to raise funds for a lovely charity, ended up being used for an amazing statement art piece by amazingly talented people who took it to the next level.”
She added that she’d spoken with the designer, Eli Russel Linnetz, and it’s all been a lovely experience.
“And to everyone who is concerned that we gave away this quilt, please don’t be worried we still have many quilts and afghans and handmade lovey‘s that she left behind for us,” she added.
Though I don’t know Sarah or her late great-grandmother, I can’t imagine anyone wouldn’t get a kick out of seeing their old quilt walk down the red carpet next to Rihanna.
