A$AP Rocky’s new single “D.M.B.” was released on Thursday, including the song’s rather romantic music video which stars the rapper’s real-life partner, Rihanna.
The music video appears to have been filmed last year in July in New York City, as the couple were seen filming there.
“D.M.B.” opens up on the the rapper in a full suit and sunglasses, then transitions to clips depicting everyday city life: hanging out on a basketball court, walking on the street, a dance party scene, the interior of a hair salon, A$AP being arrested and released from jail, and more.
In a scene near the end of the music video, A$AP lifts a red veil that is covering Rihanna’s face, wearing a grill that spells out the question, “Marry me?” and Rihanna smiles, showing the letters “I do.”
The music video ends with the pair of them walking down an apartment building hallway as people throw rose petals over them, the imagery reminiscent of a wedding.
A$AP wrote and directed the music video himself, with the idea of the story being a “ghetto love tale.”
Press materials about the music video described the story as “depicting true ride-or-die characters in a devoted relationship despite their circumstances.”
The rapper also seems to call out Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend Chris Brown with the line, “I don’t beat my bitch, I need my bitch,” a thinly-veiled reference to Brown’s attack on Rihanna in 2009.
While the characters in the music video “walked down the aisle” together, it isn’t clear if the real-life couple is engaged, or even married. The pair have been both friends and music collaborators for coming up on a decade and are currently expecting their first child together.
Rihanna, 34, had said in an interview with Vogue that they hadn’t planned on starting a family together, but they were also “certainly not planning against it.”
“I don’t know when I ovulate or any of that type of shit. We just had fun,” Rihanna said.
“And then it was just there on the test. I didn’t waste any time. I called him inside and showed him. Then I was in the doctor’s office the next morning and our journey began.”
